Scouting Report

OVERVIEW

Williams made a meteoric rise from a rotation option on Alabama's defensive line into a unanimous All-American and possible top-10 selection in the 2019 NFL draft.

He showed flashes of becoming a difference-maker as a redshirt freshman, when Da'Shawn Hand (a fourth-round pick of the Lions) missed time due to an injury. Though he finished with 20 tackles on the season, 6.5 of them came behind the line of scrimmage and he enjoyed his best game - five tackles, including two for loss - in the annual showdown with rival LSU.

Williams wasted no time in setting new career-highs in his breakout 2018 campaign, racking up six tackles, including 3.5 for loss against Louisville in the season-opener, the first start of his career. He saved his best play for conference opponents, including a dominant showing against the Tigers again (10 tackles, 3.5 for loss, 2.5 sacks).

He finished the 2018 season with 71 tackles, including 19.5 for loss and eight sacks, earning the Outland Trophy and being named a finalist for both the Nagurski and Bednarik awards within days of turning 21 years old.

ANALYSIS

Williams is built with broad shoulders and a thick, evenly distributed musculature. Blessed with an exceptional combination of raw power and shocking quickness, alternately beating opponents with strength and speed. Often the first defender off the ball, surprising would-be blockers with his quick-twitch explosiveness, showing the ability to fire through gaps to penetrate and ruining plays from the start.

Williams has the upper-body strength and length to stack and shed at the point of attack, utilizing a powerful push-pull technique to quickly rip through would-be blockers. Terrific core strength, leg drive and use of leverage to drive would-be blockers into the backfield on simple bull rushes and when anchoring, including against double-teams. An intimidating tackler, swallowing ballcarriers with his wingspan and power and tossing them to the turf in dramatic fashion.

Projection: First Round
